REMSEN, NY — What looks like just another neighbor dispute on the surface turned into a full-blown felony case, and it’s got people around Remsen talking.

According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called on April 24th to a home in the Town of Remsen for what was initially reported as suspicious activity. But once they got there, it didn’t take long to realize this wasn’t just someone wandering where they shouldn’t be.

Investigators say a neighbor allegedly broke a window on a truck while also being on the victim’s property. The damage to the vehicle was reported to be over $250 — and that number matters more than people think. Once it crosses that threshold, it can bump charges into felony territory.

That’s exactly what happened here.

Trevor Burns, 24, of Remsen, was arrested at the scene and charged with:

  • Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree (Felony)
  • Trespass
  • Additional Criminal Mischief charge

Burns was taken to the Law Enforcement Building, processed, and arraigned in CAP Court later that night. He is currently being held at the Oneida County Correctional Facility and is expected to appear back in the Town of Remsen Court at a later date.

Now here’s the part nobody’s saying out loud, but everyone’s thinking — disputes between neighbors don’t usually go from zero to felony overnight.

So what led up to this?

Was this a long-standing issue that finally boiled over? A bad decision in the heat of the moment? Or something more that hasn’t come out yet?

In small towns like Remsen, situations like this don’t stay quiet for long. People know each other. They remember things. And when something like this happens, it raises bigger questions about what was going on behind the scenes.

As always, this is an active case, and more details could come out as it moves through court.

Reminder: Everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
