If you’ve got a dog, a cat, or anything with teeth and a pulse running around your house — listen up.
Herkimer County just released the full 2026 rabies clinic schedule, and this isn’t one of those things you push off until “next time.” Rabies isn’t a joke. Once it shows up, it’s game over — for animals and potentially people too.
These clinics are happening across the county from March all the way into November, giving folks plenty of chances to get it done. But here’s the truth most people ignore — plenty of chances doesn’t mean people actually go.
And that’s where problems start.
Let’s keep it real for a second. If your pet isn’t vaccinated and something happens — a bite, a scratch, or even just suspicion — you’re not just dealing with vet bills. You’re dealing with quarantine, possible removal, and a whole mess nobody wants knocking on their door.
Now here’s the good part.
These clinics are either free or low-cost, run by public health, and spread out across towns like East Herkimer, Dolgeville, Old Forge, Norway, Little Falls, and more. You don’t need a fancy appointment system either — just call ahead and get yourself registered so you’re not standing around waiting.
A few things to know before you go:
- Dogs, cats, and ferrets need to be vaccinated starting young and kept up over time
- Pets must be leashed or in a carrier
- Bring proof if your pet had a previous rabies shot
- Small donation suggested, but nobody’s getting turned away over a couple bucks
And here’s something people forget — indoor pets are not magically immune. All it takes is one bat, one open door, one bad moment.
That’s it.
One.
So don’t be the person saying “I should’ve just taken care of it.”
Take the 20 minutes. Make the call. Get it done.
For fastest service, call Herkimer County Public Health at 315-867-1176 and pre-register.
We’ll say it straight — this is one of those things where doing nothing is the worst decision you can make.
Here’s Every Date — No Excuses Now
