OPPENHEIM, NY — What should’ve been a simple grocery drop-off turned into something a whole lot more serious.

According to New York State Police, a 25-year-old Oppenheim man, identified as Andrew J. Rogers, was arrested after allegedly confronting a grocery delivery driver while armed with what appeared to be a handgun.

Troopers say the driver was still inside their vehicle when Rogers approached and pointed the weapon. That’s the kind of moment where things can go sideways real fast — and anyone watching from the outside would’ve assumed the worst.

Here’s where it takes a turn.

Police later determined the weapon was not a real firearm, but an imitation handgun capable of firing metal BB-style projectiles. Still, from a driver’s point of view, there’s no way to tell the difference in that moment. And that’s exactly what’s got people talking.

Rogers was charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon and was later arraigned in Oppenheim Town Court, where he was released on his own recognizance.

Troopers say Rogers told them he wasn’t expecting a delivery that day. But that explanation isn’t sitting right with everyone.

Because here’s the truth no one can ignore — when you point anything that looks like a gun at someone, you’re rolling the dice on how they react. That driver could’ve panicked. Someone else could’ve stepped in. This could’ve ended in flashing lights, sirens, or worse.

Instead, this one ended with charges and a whole lot of questions.

And now the community is left asking:

Was this a misunderstanding that got out of hand…
Or a situation that never should’ve happened in the first place?

As always, everyone involved is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
