ILION, NY — People around Ilion have been hearing talk about a possible data center coming to the old Remington site. Some brushed it off, some supported it, and some had questions.
But after digging through multiple state filings, one thing is clear — this isn’t just one small project.
It’s a whole lot bigger.
TVOTT Hillbilly News reviewed five separate applications filed with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation under the Brownfield Cleanup Program. All five — labeled Sites A through E — were submitted on the same day and are tied directly to the redevelopment of the former Remington facility.
That alone tells you this isn’t one building. It’s a coordinated plan.
Inside those filings, one section tied to Site C clearly references data center redevelopment. But it doesn’t stop there.
Supporting materials and visual layouts included in the applications show two major sections of the facility labeled “Site C” and “Site E,” both outlined as large portions of the structure being repurposed. Each of those areas is estimated at roughly 250,000 square feet.
Do the math, and you’re looking at something around half a million square feet of potential data center space inside that complex.
Now here’s where it matters.
These aren’t final approvals. These are applications. The entire project is still in the environmental review phase, which means nothing is guaranteed yet. Before anything moves forward, it has to go through cleanup approval, regulatory review, and public input.
And that’s the part a lot of people don’t realize.
This is the stage where the public can actually speak up.
Whether you’re for it, against it, or just want more answers, this is when it counts — not after construction starts.
What also stands out is the gap between what people thought was being proposed and what the documents actually show. Some early conversations around the project focused on a single facility, but the filings paint a much broader picture of what could be coming to Ilion.
And that raises a fair question.
Has the full scope of this plan been clearly explained to the people who live here?
TVOTT Hillbilly News is continuing to review documents and is reaching out to local officials and agencies for clarification on the total scope of the project, including how many data center facilities are being considered and what impact they could have on the community.
Because whether this turns into jobs, growth, and opportunity — or concerns about infrastructure, environment, and change — people deserve to know exactly what’s on the table.
Not just part of it.
The information in this article is based on publicly available documents filed with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. All proposed uses and development plans are subject to review, approval, and change. TVOTT Hillbilly News is continuing to review documents and welcomes responses from all involved parties.
