ROME, NY — What should’ve been a quick, simple stop turned into something a whole lot bigger Friday night in the City of Rome.
According to the Rome Police Department, officers were conducting a routine traffic stop around 11:47 PM on the 100 block of West Embargo Street. The stop involved a female riding a bicycle — nothing out of the ordinary at first.
Police say the officer requested basic pedigree information, something that usually takes a minute or two and everyone goes on their way.
But this one didn’t go that route.
Authorities say the woman refused repeated requests and then attempted to leave the scene while still in control of her bicycle. At that point, officers moved to take her into custody — and that’s when things escalated.
Police report the woman actively resisted, prompting the need for additional units to respond.
Eventually, she was taken into custody without further incident.
The individual was identified as 45-year-old Brigette A. Thien of Rome. She now faces multiple charges, including:
- Resisting Arrest
- Obstructing Governmental Administration in the Second Degree
- A violation of New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law
She was processed and released with an appearance ticket and is expected to answer the charges in Rome City Court at a later date.
Now here’s the part folks around here are already talking about…
This started as a simple stop. No chase. No major incident. Just a basic interaction that could’ve been over in minutes.
Instead, it turned into multiple charges and a situation that pulled in more officers.
And that’s where the debate kicks in.
Some will say police escalate too fast. Others will say situations like this don’t escalate unless something pushes them there.
Either way, one thing’s clear — how a situation is handled in those first few moments can decide how the whole thing plays out.
As always, everyone involved is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
