In towns across the Mohawk Valley, a growing number of parents are asking a big question:

Is public school still the best option—or is homeschooling the smarter move?

This debate ain’t new, but lately, it’s getting louder.

Some parents are pulling their kids out of public schools altogether, saying concerns over safety, curriculum, and classroom environments just don’t sit right anymore. Others argue public schools provide structure, social development, and opportunities that homeschooling simply can’t match.

On one side, homeschooling families say they want more control over what their kids are learning and how they’re being raised.

“I know exactly what my kid is being taught,” one local parent said. “No surprises, no nonsense.”

On the other side, supporters of public schools say pulling kids out could hurt their social growth and limit exposure to real-world situations.

“School is more than books,” another parent shared. “It’s about learning how to deal with people, challenges, and life.”

There’s also the financial and time commitment factor. Homeschooling often requires a parent to stay home or dedicate significant time, something not every family can afford.

Meanwhile, public schools continue to face criticism over funding, staffing shortages, and policy changes—fueling the conversation even more.

At the end of the day, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

But one thing’s for sure:

Folks around here have opinions—and they ain’t holding back.
