HERKIMER, NY —
Late Sunday night, something as simple as a strange noise in the woods turned into a full-blown police response that had people in the area wondering what was going on.
According to scanner reports around 10:31 PM, a caller reported hearing unusual noises coming from the wooded area near Lowe’s on Route 5. The concern was enough to get deputies moving quickly, with multiple units responding and coordinating over the radio.
As officers arrived, they began checking the north shoulder and surrounding wooded areas. Additional units joined in, and at one point, a perimeter was discussed and set up along nearby roads, including Main Road.
For a short time, it looked like this could be something serious. The kind of situation where neighbors start peeking out windows, texting each other, and wondering if they should be worried.
But after searching the area and tracking down the source of the noise, deputies confirmed what was actually behind it.
A deer.
That’s right — after all the movement, coordination, and concern, the disturbance was traced back to a deer moving through the woods near the roadway.
Deputies cleared the scene shortly after, confirming there was no threat to the public.
Now before anyone starts laughing too hard, here’s the reality — this is exactly how these situations are supposed to work. Someone hears something that doesn’t sound right, they call it in, and law enforcement checks it out.
Sometimes it turns into something serious. Sometimes it doesn’t.
This time, it didn’t.
But you’d rather have deputies show up and it be nothing… than the other way around.
Still, it didn’t stop people nearby from wondering what was going on while it unfolded — and it’s a reminder of just how quickly things can escalate from a simple call to a full response.
