ONEIDA, NY — Folks around here are talking, and not in a quiet way either.
The Oneida City Police Department announced the arrest of a man tied to a sexual assault investigation that started back on March 29, 2026. According to police, officers responded that day to a call involving a female victim who was found in serious emotional distress.
From there, investigators didn’t waste time.
Police say they conducted a full, thorough investigation—collecting evidence, conducting interviews, and following up on every lead they could. That work led them to identify Sean Branigan, who reportedly has no permanent address, as the suspect.
On April 3rd, Branigan was taken into custody without incident.
Now here’s where things take a turn that’s got people raising their eyebrows.
Branigan has been charged with:
- Rape in the First Degree (Class B Felony)
- Burglary in the Second Degree (Class C Felony)
- Petit Larceny (Class A Misdemeanor)
Those aren’t small charges. That’s serious stuff.
After processing, he was brought to the Madison County Jail for centralized arraignment. Prosecutors recommended:
- $50,000 cash bail
- $100,000 bond
- $250,000 partially secured bond
But despite that request…
He was released on his own recognizance.
Yeah—walked out.
Police say the investigation is still active, and they’re working closely with the Madison County District Attorney’s Office to continue building the case.
The Chief of Police emphasized that the department remains committed to holding offenders accountable and protecting the community.
But let’s be honest—this is the kind of situation that gets people talking.
When charges this serious lead to someone being released, folks start asking questions about the system, how decisions are made, and whether justice is really being served.
Right now, this case isn’t over—not even close.
And you can bet people across Oneida and the Mohawk Valley will be watching closely to see what happens next.
