HERKIMER COUNTY, NY — Well folks, here’s one that’s got people shaking their heads across the Mohawk Valley.

A Herkimer-based plumbing business owner is now facing a pile of criminal charges after what authorities describe as a multi-community fraud investigation.

According to officials, Steven Vitalo, 32, owner of Central Plumbing & Drains, turned himself in to New York State Police earlier this month after investigators started digging into complaints from multiple towns.

Now here’s where it gets serious.

Authorities say the charges include:

  • Insurance fraud
  • Grand larceny
  • Attempted grand larceny
  • Scheme to defraud

And this wasn’t just one upset customer.

The investigation reportedly began after complaints came in from several communities, including Oneonta, Exeter, Richfield Springs, Hartwick, and Milford — meaning this situation stretched well beyond just Herkimer County.

That right there tells you this wasn’t some small misunderstanding — this was something investigators took seriously across multiple towns.

After surrendering to police, Vitalo was processed and released, as the charges filed are currently considered non-bailable under New York law.

💬 The Bigger Picture

Now let’s talk real for a second…

When folks hire someone to work on their homes — plumbing, heating, whatever — they’re putting trust (and hard-earned money) into that person’s hands. Cases like this hit harder in smaller communities because word spreads fast, and trust matters even more.

And right now, a lot of people across the Mohawk Valley are probably asking the same question:

“How many others were affected?”

That part may come out as the case moves through court.

⚖️ What Happens Next

As of now, the charges remain allegations, and the case will move through the legal system where the facts will ultimately be determined in court.
